    • Travelled with another physician to Gondar Ethiopia for a week. Learned new surgical techniques, and provided vision-restoring cataract surgery to patients who would otherwise not have been able to have surgery.

    • Spent one month in Cape Town, South Africa with a host family. Worked at Victoria Hospital, a public hospital in the township of Wynberg. Was a member of the Pediatric team. Also spent several days in surgery with the Ophthalmologist on staff.

  • PI: Dr. Cybil Cassady, MD; looking at patient-centered interventions to improve compliance to patching regimens in children with amblyopia.

The Ohio State University, Havener Eye Institute

  • PI: Dr. Michael B. Wells, MD; looked at the incidence of pigment epithelial detachments (PED) in patients with central serous chorioretinopathy detected by high definition optical coherence tomography. As a secondary end point we looked at the rate of correspondence of the PED with the hot spot seen on fluorescein angiogram.

University of Rochester, Department of Neuroscience

  • PI: Kathleen and Ernie Nordeen, PhD; research focused on the role of CAM-KII in song learning and memory in the male Australian zebra finch


Volunteer Work

Physicians Free Clinic, Columbus, Ohio

  • Primary Care and subspecialty clinic that is held weekly at the Columbus Health Department, patients with ocular complaints are seen and treated or referred to the Gowdy Free Clinic for further care if needed; staffed by residents and attendings

Gowdy Free Clinic, Columbus, Ohio

  • Ophthalmology free clinic held bimonthly at the Havener Eye Institute – patients without health insurance or financial aid are seen and treated for a variety of ophthalmic complaints

Ride for World Health, Director of Finance for the 2009 ride

  • Ride for World Health is a 501c3 non-profit organization that is run by medical students at The Ohio State University. Every year they plan and participate in a 3,700 mile bicycle ride that takes place during April and May and runs from San Diego, CA to Washington, DC. In addition to raising money for their beneficiaries they also conduct a coast-to-coast lecture series along their ride to educate people (from senior citizens to elementary school children) about current issues in global healthcare. In 2009 I was in charge of all of the finances, and also participated in the ride.

Columbus Literacy Council, teacher’s aide volunteer

  • Teacher’s aide in pre-GRE classes in math and science; classes consisted of 10-20 students, assisted students with sample problems and understanding concepts
